Speech Therapy for Teens in Quebec
Clinique d'orthophonie Passage offers speech therapy services for teens across Quebec, in person in Val-d'Or, Montreal (Westmount and South-West) and Mont-Laurier, as well as through teletherapy throughout the province.
Our speech-language pathologists are all members of the OOAQ and support teens and young adults with speech, language, or communication difficulties, from the start of high school to the transition to cégep or the workforce. No medical referral is required.
When Should a Teen Consult a Speech-Language Pathologist?
In adolescence, academic and social demands ramp up quickly. Some teens who seemed to be coping in elementary school see their difficulties emerge or intensify in high school. Here are the signs that generally warrant a speech-language evaluation:
- Slow, choppy, or laborious reading that slows down note-taking and exams
- Difficulty writing, persistent spelling errors despite adapted instruction
- Effortful comprehension of long or complex instructions, in class and in writing
- Persistent stuttering or avoidance of certain speaking situations (presentations, phone calls, public speaking)
- Difficulties with social communication: finding words, participating in conversations, picking up on subtext, understanding humour
- Significant fatigue after school days despite sustained effort
It is never too late to intervene in adolescence.
A free 15-minute call with a speech-language pathologist can help clarify the situation. For younger family members, also visit our page for children.
How Our Speech-Language Pathologists Support Teens
Clinique Passage offers a complete range of services tailored to your teen’s age and language profile. Each intervention plan takes into account their personal goals and academic context.
Targeted Speech-Language Evaluation
The speech-language evaluation analyzes your teen’s oral language, written language, and communication, with tasks designed for their level. It leads to a clear report and an intervention plan with targeted goals. The report can be shared with the school to support academic accommodations or an application for the Supplement for Handicapped Children from Retraite Québec.
Follow-Up Adapted to Your Teen's Pace
Speech therapy follow-up takes place in personalized individual sessions. Our speech-language pathologists use evidence-based approaches, including cognitive behavioural therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy when communication anxiety is part of the picture. To see the full range of our approaches, visit our therapy modalities. Tangible progress generally appears after 6 to 12 sessions.
Collaboration With School and Family
Teens benefit when intervention is consistent across the clinic, home, and school environment. We can collaborate with teachers, participate in the school intervention plan, and equip your teen to use assistive technology. We also respect their growing need for autonomy in their own therapy.
The Difficulties We Treat in Teens
Our speech-language pathologists evaluate and support teens with a wide range of language and learning difficulties, in French, in English, or bilingually. The main concerns we address include:

Why Choose Clinique Passage for Your Teen
Four elements distinguish Clinique Passage for families looking for support for a teenager.
An Approach That Respects Teen Autonomy
In adolescence, your young person becomes the primary partner in their therapy. Our speech-language pathologists negotiate goals with them, adjust session frequency to their academic reality, and respect their pace, with or without a parent present, depending on the need.
Bilingual French and English Services
Sessions are delivered in French, in English, or bilingually, based on your teen's preference. This flexibility especially benefits multilingual teens and those studying in a language different from the one spoken at home.
Team Members of the OOAQ
All of our speech-language pathologists are members in good standing of the Ordre des orthophonistes et audiologistes du Québec. Meet our team of speech-language pathologists and their respective specializations.
Accès rapide, sans référence médicale
No prescription or commitment is required to consult. Follow-up can stop at any time.
Fees and Financial Support
Speech therapy services are privately billed in Quebec, but several reimbursement and financial support mechanisms can help reduce the cost.
- Speech-language pathologist rate: $165 per 50-minute session
- Language correction agent rate (supervised by a speech-language pathologist): $150 per hour
- Full evaluation: $555 per session, including data collection, analysis, results review, and intervention plan
Speech therapy is a tax-exempt health service in Quebec. Group and private insurance plans often cover a significant portion of the fees. For teens who stutter, the Association des jeunes bègues du Québec (AJBQ) offers a financial support program for speech therapy. The Supplement for Handicapped Children from Retraite Québec and the Child Disability Benefit from the Government of Canada may also apply when difficulties cause significant limitations to your teen’s academic success.
Every voice deserves to be heard, regardless of age or family budget.
Of course, we cannot guarantee the results of services. However, we do everything in our power to ensure that services have positive impacts as quickly as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions About Speech Therapy for Teens
My Teen Refuses to Consult, What Can I Do?
It is common for a teenager to resist the idea of consulting, especially if they have had previous experiences they did not enjoy. We recommend starting with a free 15-minute call, which your teen can attend if they wish. During the first session, the speech-language pathologist takes the time to build a rapport, explain the process, and negotiate goals with your young person. If, after a few sessions, they are not ready, it is always possible to pause the follow-up and come back later.
Is It Too Late to Start Speech Therapy in Adolescence?
No. Many teens consult for the first time in high school, either because their difficulties were not identified earlier or because academic demands have brought out a previously compensated disorder. Speech therapy can help at any age by targeting the skills most useful for cégep, university, or the workforce. An intervention in adolescence can make a real difference for academic success and communication confidence.
Do Parents Need to Attend the Sessions?
It depends on the teen’s age and level of autonomy. For the first session, we strongly recommend a parent be present to discuss needs, history, and logistics. For subsequent sessions, your young person can attend on their own if they are over 14 and would prefer it. We stay in communication with parents about the broader direction of the follow-up, while respecting the teen’s clinical confidentiality.
How Many Sessions Are Typically Needed?
Evidence-based practices suggest 6 to 12 regular sessions to achieve tangible progress. With teens, frequency can vary according to the school year: more frequent sessions outside exam periods, more spaced out during busy times. We adapt the intervention plan to your teen’s progress.
Does Teletherapy Work Well With Teens?
Yes, and it is often a modality that works particularly well. Teens are comfortable with digital tools and appreciate the flexibility of attending their sessions remotely after school. To learn more about the possible formats, read our article on the advantages of hybrid approaches combining teletherapy and in-person sessions.
