Dyslexia and Dysorthographia: The Daily Challenges Families Face

Your child takes twice as long as classmates to read a short paragraph. Spelling tests come back covered in red marks. Homework becomes a battle every evening. You wonder whether these difficulties are temporary or whether they reveal a true learning disorder. Finding a speech-language pathologist who can answer that question quickly is not simple.

Wait lists that delay intervention

Waiting months for a school-based evaluation while your child falls further behind. Clinique Passage offers fast access to services, and when our team cannot respond immediately, we refer to trusted colleagues.

Speech-language pathologist or orthopédagogue: who should you see?

Not knowing whether your child needs a speech-language pathologist or an orthopédagogue. The speech-language pathologist evaluates and provides the conclusion of dyslexia-dysorthographia. The orthopédagogue then works on academic strategies. The two roles are complementary.

Confidence eroding at school

Watching your child lose self-confidence, avoid reading aloud, refuse to write. These avoidance behaviours are common and do not reflect a lack of intelligence or effort.

Limited services in your region

Not having access to services in your area. Our hybrid model combines in-person sessions in Westmount, Val-d'Or and Mont-Laurier, and online sessions across Québec.

If these situations resonate with you, a speech-language evaluation can clarify the picture and guide the next steps.

How Speech Therapy Treats Dyslexia

Dyslexia is a specific neurodevelopmental learning disorder of neurological origin affecting reading. It presents as persistent difficulties decoding words, recognizing their visual form or reading fluently. Speech therapy treatment for dyslexia is based on an in-depth evaluation of reading pathways, followed by targeted remediation of the impaired processes.

Targeted Remediation Based on Your Child's Profile

Our speech-language pathologists evaluate oral and written language skills and the underlying cognitive processes using standardized tests. Intervention then targets the impaired processes: phonological awareness, grapheme-phoneme correspondence, visual word recognition or morphosyntactic skills. We specify the diagnosis and establish intervention priorities based on SMART goals targeted for their potential to improve reading and writing skills. Each intervention plan is individualized and adjusted as progress is made. Learn about the populations we serve.

Dyslexia Treatment Targeting the Lexical Reading Route

When a person cannot visually recognize words in their whole form, they must decode syllable by syllable, making reading slow and laborious. Irregular words pose a particular problem: "women" is read exactly as spelled, "colonel" becomes "col-o-nel." The speech-language pathologist works to strengthen the visual lexical inventory and develop orthographic memorization strategies.

Dyslexia Treatment Targeting the Phonological Reading Route

When a person has difficulty using grapheme-phoneme correspondence to decode words, reading is slow and choppy. It may also include multiple errors because the person tries to "guess" the word rather than decode its sounds. Speech therapy intervention aims to consolidate the correspondence between sounds and letters and increase decoding speed. Strategies are also taught for knowing when to use the phonological route rather than the lexical route, and for decoding with greater accuracy.

Dyslexia and Dysorthographia: A Frequently Linked Disorder

Dysorthographia frequently accompanies dyslexia. The difficulties that affect reading can also affect writing: the child may spell words the way they sound, forget certain spelling patterns or have difficulty applying grammar rules in written work.

That is why our speech-language pathologists systematically evaluate reading and writing together. These two skills rely on closely related processes, and working on them jointly generally yields stronger progress.

Frequently Asked Questions About Speech Therapy, Dyslexia and Dysorthographia

A speech-language pathology conclusion of dyslexia-dysorthographia is often provided around the end of Grade 2. The child must have been exposed to reading and writing long enough to distinguish a persistent disorder from a developmental delay. Early warning signs can, however, be identified sooner.

The speech-language pathologist evaluates and treats written language disorders, while the orthopédagogue works on developing learning strategies and adapting academic tasks. The two professionals are complementary. The speech-language pathologist is qualified to provide a conclusion of dyslexia-dysorthographia and targets the mechanisms underlying reading and writing. The orthopédagogue works within the field of education.

No, dyslexia cannot be cured, but speech therapy can help reduce its impacts. Thanks to brain plasticity, individuals with dyslexia can improve their reading skills, and speech therapy can also help them develop effective compensatory strategies. Dyslexia is a neurodevelopmental disorder that persists throughout life. Early, regular intervention generally leads to significant improvements in reading skills and helps the child develop effective strategies for reading and learning through reading.

Yes. Dyslexia and dysorthographia are closely linked, because reading and writing largely rely on shared written language processes.
