When to Consult a Speech-Language Pathologist for Your Child
A speech-language evaluation can clarify your child’s profile and guide the next steps. Here are the signs that generally warrant a speech therapy consultation:
- Difficulty pronouncing certain speech sounds beyond the expected age (lisping, sound inversions, or omissions)
- Limited vocabulary or short sentences compared to children of the same age
- Repetitions, prolongations, or blocks suggestive of stuttering
- More effortful comprehension of instructions than peers
- Slow, hesitant, or choppy reading from Grade 1 onward
- Persistent spelling errors that do not improve with regular instruction
It is never too early or too late to work on a child’s communication.
A free 15-minute call with a speech-language pathologist can help you decide.
How Our Speech-Language Pathologists Help Children
Clinique Passage offers a complete range of speech therapy services for children, from screening to ongoing follow-up. Each intervention plan is tailored to your child’s age and language profile, as well as your family’s reality.
Speech-Language Evaluation
A speech-language evaluation analyzes how your child understands others and expresses themselves. It generally follows these steps:
- Gathering information about the child’s medical, family, and school history
- Observation through spontaneous and guided interaction, often through play for younger children
- Specific tasks related to speech, oral language, and, when needed, written language
- Analysis of results, drafting a report, and proposing an intervention plan with prioritized intervention objectives
Personalized Follow-Up
Speech therapy follow-up takes place in individual sessions adapted to each child’s age and profile. Our speech-language pathologists use a variety of evidence-based approaches, from play-based speech therapy for younger children to cognitive behavioural therapy to support a teenager dealing with communication-related anxiety. Tangible progress generally appears after 6 to 12 regular sessions.
Language Stimulation and Parent Coaching
Parents play a central role in their child’s language development. Our speech-language pathologists offer parent coaching and language stimulation strategies to apply at home, in daycare, or during interactive reading. This ecosystemic approach can also include daycare educators and school staff.

Fees and Financial Support
Speech therapy services are privately billed in Quebec, but several reimbursement and financial support mechanisms can help reduce the cost.
- Speech-language pathologist rate: $165 per 50-minute session
- Language correction agent rate (supervised by a speech-language pathologist): $150 per hour
- Full evaluation: $555 per session, including data collection, analysis, results review, and intervention plan

For teens who stutter, the Association des jeunes bègues du Québec (AJBQ) offers a financial support program for speech therapy. The Supplement for Handicapped Children from Retraite Québec and the Child Disability Benefit from the Government of Canada may also apply when difficulties cause significant limitations to your teen’s academic success.
Every voice deserves to be heard, regardless of age or family budget.
Of course, we cannot guarantee the results of services. However, we do everything in our power to ensure that services have positive impacts as quickly as possible.
Frequently Asked Questions About Speech Therapy for Children
How Do I Know if My Child Needs Speech Therapy?
If your child has difficulty with speech sounds, vocabulary, building sentences, reading, or socialization, a speech-language evaluation can clarify the situation and indicate how to help them progress.
Sometimes, difficult behaviours (tantrums, anger, withdrawal) are a sign of an underlying language development issue. We offer free 15-minute calls to discuss your concerns and guide you.
At What Age Can a Child See a Speech-Language Pathologist?
There is no minimum age. Speech-language pathologists can intervene as early as toddlerhood, sometimes before age 2, when language development appears delayed. A conclusion of developmental language disorder is generally given starting at age 4, and a conclusion of dyslexia-dysorthographia toward the end of Grade 2. Teenagers and young adults can also consult for reading, writing, or social communication.
How Many Sessions Are Typically Needed?
Evidence-based practices suggest 6 to 12 regular sessions to achieve tangible progress. Some challenges respond better to intensive, short, and frequent sessions, such as 30 minutes twice a week. Others work better with longer and less frequent sessions. We adjust the frequency based on your child’s progress.
Is Speech Therapy Covered by Private Insurance?
Speech therapy is not covered by RAMQ, but many private health insurance plans cover part or all of the fees. Some insurance companies require a medical referral, which your family doctor can easily provide.
Does Teletherapy Work Well With Young Children?
Yes. Evidence shows that teletherapy delivers clinical outcomes comparable to in-person sessions for the majority of children, including the youngest accompanied by an adult. To explore the topic further, read our article on the effectiveness of teletherapy with very young children.
